It’s not every day that I have the privilege of bringing a property to market that truly captures the essence of Waterford’s rich heritage. As someone who has lived in this picturesque village for many years and served our community through the Waterford Foundation and Citizens Association, I’m particularly honored to introduce you to “The Bank House,” a stunning Federal home circa 1806, located at 40149 Main Street.

A Legacy of Craftsmanship

The story of this extraordinary home begins with young Israel H. Thompson, who meticulously crafted this architectural gem around 1806. Though Thompson tragically passed away that same year at just 22 years of age, his legacy lives on through the home’s precisely mortared brickwork and elegant architrave under the eaves—details that still impress visitors more than two centuries later.

The home’s fascinating history continued when Thompson’s executors sold it to Richard Chilton in 1809. By 1815, Isaac Steer and his son Jonah purchased the building, and soon after, Isaac rented a “storeroom” in the house to the newly formed Loudoun Company—a bank established by local farmers and businessmen. While this banking enterprise was short-lived, it gave the home its enduring name, and according to local tradition, the steel door of the bank’s vault found new life as a horse-mounting block cap across the street.

In the late 1930s, the property was acquired by the Chamberlin family, who began the thoughtful restoration of Waterford that continues to this day. Wellman Chamberlin, National Geographic’s chief cartographer, made extensive repairs and improvements to the house at mid-century, including replacing a dilapidated porch with a hand-carved door surround he crafted himself—yet another example of the loving care this home has received throughout generations.

Historic Charm Meets Modern Living

As someone with an interior design background spanning 25 years before my real estate career, I’m particularly drawn to homes that balance historical integrity with modern comfort—and The Bank House achieves this balance beautifully.

Stepping through the front door, you’re welcomed by a grand foyer with soaring ceilings and a beautifully crafted staircase that speaks to the home’s Federal origins. The original woodworking, hardware, and wide-plank floors have been lovingly preserved, creating an authentic connection to the home’s past while providing timeless beauty.

The modern eat-in kitchen has been thoughtfully designed for both style and practicality, opening to a convenient mudroom and inviting back porch that creates a bright, airy atmosphere perfect for today’s lifestyle. For formal entertaining or family gatherings, the large dining room with its wood-burning fireplace offers warmth and character.

My personal favorite space might be the elegant paneled library with its cozy wood stove—truly the heart of this historic home. It’s easy to imagine curling up with a good book on a winter evening or hosting intimate conversations with friends in this refined yet comfortable space.

Space for Family and Gatherings

The upstairs level features five spacious bedrooms and two full baths, providing ample room for family and guests. For additional storage or potential future living space, a full walk-up attic offers tremendous versatility.

The outdoor spaces are equally impressive. The beautifully landscaped lot backs to 144 acres of preserved open land, complete with scenic walking trails and a tranquil creek—ensuring that your views and privacy will remain protected. A large side porch and stone patio provide ideal settings for outdoor entertaining or simply enjoying the serene surroundings.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the property’s original spring house and charming smokehouse, which now serves as a garden shed—delightful reminders of the property’s long history in our village.

The Waterford Lifestyle

What makes this property particularly special is its location in the heart of historic Waterford. As a long-time resident and past President of the Waterford Citizens Association, I can attest to the unique charm and strong sense of community our village offers. Living here means being part of a tight-knit community that values its heritage while embracing the future.

Located in western Loudoun County, The Bank House provides a peaceful retreat while remaining remarkably accessible. The vibrant town of Leesburg is just minutes away, and you’ll find yourself surrounded by some of Virginia’s finest wineries and breweries. For commuters, Dulles Airport is a mere 25-minute drive, and Washington, D.C. is only 30 miles from your doorstep.

A Rare Opportunity

In my years as a Realtor specializing in historic properties, I’ve developed a deep appreciation for homes that tell a story. The Bank House not only narrates over two centuries of Waterford history but also offers a canvas for its next owners to write their own chapter.

Whether you’re drawn to historic architecture, seeking a home with character and soul, or simply want to experience the unique lifestyle our village offers, I invite you to discover The Bank House. This is truly a rare opportunity to own an exceptional piece of history in one of Virginia’s most distinctive communities.
